What Are The Main Causes Of Rosacea?

As dermatologists, we specialise in skin, and know what works – and what doesn’t – when it comes to caring for it. Whether you’re blessed with ‘normal’ skin or you’re managing a debilitating condition such as rosacea, we can work with you to help create better, healthier- and more youthful-looking skin that you’ll love long-term.

Rosacea in a nutshell

In today’s post, our dermatologists here at our clinic, serving Elstree, are focusing on rosacea treatment. With a tell-tale red rash, or presenting with flushed-looking skin, rosacea is a common condition that comes and goes, and can be triggered by everything from diet, to changes in temperature or weather.

Causes of rosacea

Experts don’t know what causes rosacea – only triggers that can make symptoms worse. However, rosacea treatment can help control symptoms of this skin concern, such as redness, inflammation and spots.

Ways to treat rosacea

In-clinic, there are three main routes to rosacea treatment: laser skin treatment, which controls redness by breaking down dilated blood vessels under the skin; tablets, such as beta-blockers or antibiotics, which can deal with spots and inflammation; and topical creams, which can soothe and strengthen the skin, while combatting a flushed appearance.

Rosacea treatment at-home

Our dermatologists recommend a few things to try at home, which can help calm and ease the condition:

– Skincare – products containing aloe vera can help soothe skin, while chamomile is known for its calming properties. Other natural helpers include tea tree oil and honey.

– Supplements – green tea and turmeric act as anti-inflammatories. You can even drink green tea.

– Suncare – as sunlight can be a trigger, protecting it with suncream or covering up in the daylight can help minimise UV exposure.

– Lifestyle changes – managing stress and anxiety can help keep the condition under control. Exercise is a great way to do this, but take care that you don’t overdo it, as strenuous activity could also cause a flare-up.
