Aftercare For Laser Skin Treatments
Are you interested in having laser skin treatment? Whichever treatment you’re considering, our Dermatologists can help. Whether you’re yet to book, or you’ve already had laser skin treatment, the team at our Harley Street skin clinic want to ensure you get the best results possible while minimising any discomfort following the procedure.
We’ve already covered prep for your appointment here, so in this post, we’ll go through essential aftercare, so you get the most out of your treatment.
1. Say ‘aloe’ to aloe vera
It’s common knowledge that laser skin treatments can sometimes cause tenderness, swelling and even redness of the skin. Some clients compare the sensation to mild sunburn and others report slight irritation. Aloe vera is ideal in cooling and soothing the skin, and is well-known in the medical community for its healing properties.
2. Press pause on treatments
Just as with your laser skin treatment preparation, during the aftercare process, you also need to avoid certain cosmetic treatments. These include
injectables, dermabrasion and peels, though your Dermatologist can talk you through our recommendations in full during your consultation. Usually, you should be able to have these procedures again a couple of weeks after your laser skin treatment.
3. Guard against the sun
While our Dermatologists always recommend taking care of your skin in the sun – one of the key things that ages your skin – it’s even more important to do so during and after laser skin treatment. Incorporate a sun screen into your everyday, or use make-up with SPF benefits (you can even find lip products with SPF in nowadays). And, ensure you avoid sun beds, which can be just as powerful as the sun.
Excessive heat and sun exposure can do untold damage to skin after your treatment – even treatments such as saunas or hot tubs. Without adequate sun protection, there’s a greater risk of complications, such as changes to the skin’s tone and texture, as well as potential scarring.
4. Shake up your skincare
Now can be a great time to invest in products that really work for your unique skin, and that take your moisture levels, texture, colour and more into account. Our Dermatologists can recommend the right brands and formulations for you, and give advice on things to try – and avoid – following your laser skin treatment. Be warned that some products can cause sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity), leading to the complications listed above.
5. Check your hair
As mentioned, hair grows in cycles – so you’ll need several rounds of laser skin treatment to fully break down all the hair follicles and prevent regrowth. Once completed, your hair may shed over the next couple of weeks, and look ‘patchy’, but this will resolve at the end of treatment.
